Below is a video of another screening we organised with a member of staff in our Sixth Form. At the end he gave us an overview of what he enjoyed about our film and what he felt we could have improved/changed. We took what he had to say on board and made the sound to become increasingly loud as the film progresses. We also then fixed the fading in and fading out of the music we used to be more gradual as opposed to the sudden drop which you will notice when you watch our final film.

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

 
Horror movies usually have low key lighting, spooky music and scary-looking characters. However, we have chosen to challenege these conventions. We decided not to use low key lighting inside the house as it connotes a sense of safety in the house, eventhough she is by herself. However, we did wait until it was dark before we started shooting in order to create quite a dark and dangerous atmosphere. We have used some spooky music towards the end of the opening but we chose to subvert the genre by playing an upbeat song alongside creepy, disturbing shots. We didn't use the typical scary-looking characters, we chose to again, subvert the genre and use more realistic characters, as we found (through our research) that characters that reflect or have the potential to be real people are the ones that they find the most scary. We used costume as opposed to masks and special effects to portray our characters.

Question 2: How does your product represent particular social groups?

Question 3: Who would be the audience for your media product?

- Our ideal target audience would be teens aged 16 and over as they are the age group we were representing in our film through our main character. Our film could raise awareness to teenagers about publicising their personal information online without thinking. We feel that our film is targetted at a niche market simply because its a horror movie with a twist to it. We found out through research that 30% of our interviews stated that they did not like horror movies. I believe our film could appeal to 'The Explorer' as we subvert the genre through our sound and the exoplorer is always looking for new experiences. I also think that our film would be enjoyed by the 'Mainstream' audience aswell as our film is realistic and it raises awareness of the dangers of careless internet use. The 'Mainstream' audience is quite family orientated, therefore our film would appeal to them as it supports their view on the dangers of the internet. I wouldn't expect 'The Struggler' wouldn't be interested in to be interested in our film as they usually watch movies to escape from the reality of their lives and our film is rather realistic which is not what they are looking for. 'The Retired' would not be interested in our film simply because they are not within the age range of our target audience. They may ind it hard to understand the concept and the technology used in our film as they would be more familiar with old fashioned/traditional appliances.

Question 4: How did you attract/address your audience?

All in all, we have attracted our audience (teens+) by addressing the key issues of teenage lives. We have included props that our target audience would be extremely familiar with and created a character who has many chararcteristics that teenagers would be able to relate to. The fact that we have a lot of technology such as the iPad, iPhone, Instagram, shows that we have really thought about our audience and what would appeal to them. 

Question 5: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

New Line Cinema of Warner Bros would be a suitable production company for our film as they have been very successful with the Final Destination sequels which have a similar concept to our film. They are also a major film production company so they will be able to spend more money on producing the movie, possibly being able to get well-known/hollywood actors to star in our film. However, an independent production company such as Film4 could be another suitable choice as they are more successful in creating realistic films. Considering we have chosen to create a more realistic horror, Film4 would be  more likely to produce our film as they would be able to execute the film in the way we want it to. Our film also has quite a british feel to it, especially in the way the characters speak to each other, through text. American english is very different to British english and it is clear to see that the characters are British through the way they phrase their sentences.

Audience Research!

We interviewed a range of people and asked them a few questions to help us structure a suitable opening that would appeal to them. We wanted to find out what their favourite horror movies were and what they liked in horror movies, in order to gain knowledge of what techniques would be the best to use in our own opening.

Titles!

What is the purpose of a title sequence? This should be a detailed explanation.

- The purpose of a title sequence is to engage the audience into the movie, introducing them to the themes without giving away too much of the plot. The title sequence is the only change the editors get to show the style of the movie in a different way, a way that is creative. Its almost as if  a title sequence is a movie within a movie because the sequence by itself tells a story, preparing the audience for what is to come. 

 What was different in how text was used in zombieland than other films.

- The editors used a font that was not too funny because they didnt want to take the attention away from what was going on in the shots. However, they chose to engage the text with the film which gave the opening that extra edge to it. 

How has the designer of blue valentine tried to emotionally engage with the audience?

- He took still images which were taken on and off set and overlayed them with recordings of fireworks. It starts off as dark and with the light of the fireworks, reveals the still image underneath which evokes a feeling of love and affection as that is what is also visible in the stills.

What is the genre of the film?

- Either a comedy or a rom-com

Explain the style, (CGI, drawn, film?)

- Its all based in a miniture land, very similar to lego. Its all still images.

Explain how the style supports the genre of the film?

- The music sounds quite sad but romantic at the same time, its quite odd. I think the images shown of back gardens and roundabouts give it quite a warm feeling.

How does it introduce you to the film?

- I think it shows us miniature versions of real life locations in the movie so we know it will be based in a city/neighbourhood.

How does it draw you into the film?

- The cute images of the miniature houses and trampolines, because they look so real you're force to keep watching to then realise that its all miniature. You then want to watch the movie to see if there will be real people in it or if it will carry on with the miniature theme.

             How is the font used? What effect do they have? How does it link to the films genre?

- There are several fonts used and each of them are used to go with the image they are in for example some font is in the sun so its shadows are reflected in front of it. The font used with the trampoline has a 'y' which looks like its been knocked down which could possibly represent the childlike feel of the trampoline. It links to the films genre as it has elements of humour in it as well as the conservative side to it.

            What type of transitions are used by the editor? What effect do they have?

-The editor has used simple cuts which give it quite a calm, subtle tone to it.

                        How do the titles reflect the THEME of the film? 

- The fact that the titles do not move at all, they are just still, reflect the theme of loneliness which is explored in the movie. 

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

What is the genre of the film?

- Either and action adventure, horror or thriller

Explain the style, (CGI, drawn, film?)

- A lot of CGI and I think some was drawn aswell.

Explain how the style supports the genre of the film?

- The CGI is very dark and rustig. The weapons fly fast across the screen and the drawings of the characters are made to look very old fashioned but scary.

How does it introduce you to the film?

- It basically tells us who the two main characters are and where they fit in the movie; we find out that they are witch hunters but also orphans as well as heros.

How does it draw you into the film?

- The music really helps to draw the audience to the opening as it is very frightful and demanding, it puts the audience on the edge of their seats. It also supports the images that are shown as the music builds up when hansel and gretel are killing the witch and then slows down again when it goes through the woods or over the town. 

             How is the font used? What effect do they have? How does it link to the films genre?

- The font is very sharp and witch-like it really enhances the spooky feel to the genre of the movie, as it looks quite evil and dark.

            What type of transitions are used by the editor? What effect do they have?

- The editor uses zooms and they also use the fire to fade between each shots. 

                        How do the titles reflect the THEME of the film? 

- All the titles are shown on burnt pieces of newspaper which reflect the theme of destruction in the movie as well as heroism as they are headlines on the front of newspapers.

- Horror

Explain the style, (CGI, drawn, film?)

- I think its a combination of film and CGI as the font seems to be very precise.

Explain how the style supports the genre of the film

- The film in the beginning builds tension and straight away you can tell its a horror because of the extremely dark setting and the fact that it is silent, the only sound being heard is the pendulum. 

How does it introduce you to the film?

-Through the different clips of the notebooks opening, showing pictures of deformed hands, eradicated faces, razor blades and so on introduce us to the type of horror it is. They also give us a brief idea of what the movie will be about so we have a sight idea of whta to expect.

How does it draw you into the film?

- The use of the unsettling music which involves disturbing screaming make us more interested along with the short flashing images. The fact the the flashes are quick encourage the audience to keep watching to see what comes up next. 

             How is the font used? What effect do they have? How does it link to the films genre?

- The font is used to exaggerate the theme of the movie as it seems to be handwritten but by someone who has abnormal hands which explains why the first picture seen is one of a pair of crooked hands. The font add to the unsettling feeling of the music and the way it flashes connotes a sense of distortion.

            What type of transitions are used by the editor? What effect do they have?

- The editor used flashes and fades which build tension as you never know what is going to come up next.

                        How do the titles reflect the THEME of the film? 

- The fact that the titles are distorted as well flashing reflect the fast paced, jumpy theme of the movie.

What is the genre of the film?

- Crime drama

Explain the style, (CGI, drawn, film?)

- Film

Explain how the style supports the genre of the film?

- The use of film only creates a sense of realism which allows the events which occur later on in the movie to be more believeable.

How does it introduce you to the film?

- A series of establishing shots, shoing us the location intercutting with shots of the main character driving.

How does it draw you into the film?

- The continuous shots of the main character driving make the audience want to know where he is driving to.

             How is the font used? What effect do they have? How does it link to the films genre?

- I found the font quite confusing as its pink and femenine, whilst the main character is male. I think it gives the opening a hint of mystery and possibly suggests that women have a significant role in the movie.

            What type of transitions are used by the editor? What effect do they have?

- The only transition used is fade which add to the shots of the man driving, making it seem as if he has been driving for a long time.

                        How do the titles reflect the THEME of the film? 

- Even though the titles are pink, they are in a type of 'barbie' font which reflects the scandalous theme of the movie.

INSPIRATION.

One of the title sequences we have looked at is the opening of a Danish TV series called 'The Killing'. We thought that the simplicity of the title sequence is really effective especially because the genre is thriller/horror. Eventhough it is just credits on a background, intercutting with continuous shots of a someone running, it engages the sudience by building suspense without giving too much away, and that is exactly the effect we want to have on our audience with our film.

Another title sequence that inspired us was the Final Destination 3 opening sequence. We liked the way the font imediately conforms to the genre of the movie which is horror. As well as conforming to the genre, the way the font seems quite old or destroyed reflects what happens in the movie (deaths, destruction of lives, happiness, relationships).

(EXAM) - Transitions.

Wipe

Wipes can be a very dangerous tool when it comes to video editing. Most of those cheesy wipes that come with your free editing software have little to no logical purpose. If you’re going to use a wipe, I suggest using a particle wipe. This is usually something like a bunch of sparkles, or bubbles or hearts transitioning one picture to another. I recommend these because, once again depending on your project, they can hold purpose.

Location: Angel, Islington

Jodie and I went to shoot some establishing shots in Angel. We found it quite hard to get the exact shots we wanted to get as we couldn't get high enough to get the perfect birds eye view. However, we got some shots of traffic and a few high angle shots.

Friday 8th Feb 2013

Location: Nightingale Estate

We all went to Nightingale estate to get some better establishing shots of the area. Nightingale is a tower block so we went to the 21st floor, and took some shots of the view. We panned from left to right, hopefully this will be our first shot.

Saturday 9th Feb 2013

Location: Tottenham

Nga, Jodie and Mica plus our cast went to a house in which they filmed most of the shots. I wasn't able to go for a reason that was out of my control. It didn't go in the way that we all wanted it to so we have to do some re-takes but we did get some really good shots.

Sunday 17th Feb 2013
Location: Essex (Jodie's House)
We all went down to essex to film the house scenes. We used the blue and grey filters over the lights to create a "crack house" atmosphere. The filming went really well however, when we looked back at the footage we realised that we didn't have enough extras to make it look realistic and we didn't use enough camera techniques so we scheduled another filming day to get some more shots.

Thursday 21st Feb 2013
Location: Hackney (Pedro's House)
We decided that the car scene of our opening would be too complicated considering the amount of time we had to film and getting the lady to drive. So to avoid further complication we chose to start our film with the main character (Pedro) at his house. Here, we got some great shots of our main character and his mum. Again we used the lights to create a "warm" atmosphere. As we were filming using the stairs in his house we had some complications with the shadow of the camera being visible in the frame but we were able to work round that and get the shots we needed.

Synopsis

The film follows a day in the lives of a group of 18 year olds from a low income area of East London. The story focuses mainly upon a group of friends known as (their name). The protagonist Derell, is caught up in the life of sex, money and drugs. His life all comes crashing down from the moment his mums alcoholic ways become unbearable. She doesnt work or pay bills, so Derell tries to make ends meet by stealing. Although Derell isn't dependent on his mother, he has a little sister that he still has to care for, alongside being involved in one of the biggest drug scandals in the city. Whilst being caught up in this, Derell and the (name) are robbed of £100,000 worth of drugs. Will they find out who really stole it?

Once we finish planning we will add the remaining details - Below is the alternated synopsis for our film after making the final changes.

The Plan.

To help plan our task we made a list of influences and props we'll need to give us an idea of what our film would be based on, and the props that'll help portray our genre. We then created a brainstorm based around our main character, this is just a brief description.

We then created a storyline for our task, and listed all the different locations that we'll be filming.

During our planning process we came to the conclusion that our ideas were too complicated to establish in the first two minutes of our film so we decided to simplify our ideas. Below are the simplified versions of our plans.

Genre

We decided that our traget audience would be teens/young adults because we feel that we would be able to relate with them more as we are the same age and we know first hand what teens find interesting, so we conducted a survey in order to see which genre was most commonly preferred in our sixth form.

As you can see the majority of the students in our sixth form prefer dramas so we have all came to the conclusion that we want to do a DRAMA with elements of thriller for our main task. We researched the different movies that we have seen, (obviously being dramas) that we liked and chose these movies as main inspiration:

My Wife And Kids

My Wife And Kids is one of my favourite tv shows of all time. I enjoy watching it because I find it really amusing how the individuals of the family get themselves into such silly situations. There are a lot more people other than just myself who love this show and I think it's because it relates to different people in different ways. Most families are nothing like the Kyle family however, people may enjoy watching it because they want their own family to be like that or because they can relate to one of the individual characters as My Wife And Kids does cover some realistic situations and issues but in and extreme way to make it funny.
